Nitros baseball (www.nitrosbaseball.com) is a summer baseball collegiate league that plays in Wellsville, NY and they are looking for host families who are willing to house a player for the 8 - 9 weeks season.  You do not have to live in Wellsville to host, there are  families from all over, including Pennsylvania.    They  do try to keep within a 30 minute drive.   A small financial stipend is offered  to help assist the housing and hosts get in free to the ballgames.  Players are responsible for their own personal items and transportation.   Hosts  are asked  to provide a bed and food.

Galeton Business and Professional Women’s Club now has their annual Garden Tour Raffle tickets on sale.  Raffle prizes this year are a $100 gift card from Nittany Minit Mart in Galeton; a $30 gift card from County Line Enterprises in Galeton; a $25. Gift Card from Hampson’s Agway in Wellsboro; a $25 gift card from Martin’s Garden Center in Middlebury Center; a $20 gift certificate from Kaytee’s Market in Coudersport; a $15 gift certificate from Hershey’s Farm Market in Coudersport; a Bucket of Garden Supplies from Cimino’s Hardware in Galeton; a garden gazing globe from Oak Hall Bed and Breakfast; a hanging basket with flowers; and a garden bucket of Garden Goodies.

Tickets are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00 and are available at Galeton Drug, Lakeview Cinema, from any BPW member or by calling Raffle Chairperson, Nancy Bradley at 435-2983.   The drawing will be held during the annual Garden Tour and Plant Sale which will be held on Sunday, June 24 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm.  Proceeds from this raffle will go into various BPW projects and activities during the year.  You need not be in attendance to win. 

                              And if anyone is doing a bit of early garden work, thinning plants, etc. and would like to donate items to the plant sale, please contact Barbara Welfling at 435-6616….BPW will accept any plants you would like to donate and we also have plenty of transplant containers if you need them.  The Garden Tour will have several stops in both the Galeton and Germania area.  The plant sale will be held on Main Street in Galeton –which will also include several door prizes.  Proceeds from the Garden Tour go into the Elinor A. Martin Education Fund which helps to provide scholarship money to Galeton Senior girls who plan to attend college.  BPW also supports many community projects as well as the Children’s Reading Program at the Galeton Public Library.

The Potter County Ed Council is offering a Spring Photography Weekend in the PA Wilds with Curt Weinhold, a nationally published, PA Wilds Juried Artisan.  This intensive weekend will be spent learning to create photographs suitable for framing!  “Meet and greet” Friday evening at cozy Susquehannock Lodge. After breakfast, Saturday there will be  some tech talk about the best methods for maximum quality.  Then armed with a sack lunch, enjoy a lengthy field trip to find scenes, streams and close ups of wildflowers.  Special attention will be given to composition and lighting.  Back at the Lodge, feast on a sumptuous meal prepared by your innkeepers, Ed and Carol.  Enjoy an entertaining evening critiquing the day’s pictures. After a peaceful night’s sleep and breakfast, Sunday morning is for review and an optional short field trip before departing for home.Please take: Comfortable and appropriate clothing and footwear; Camera with memory cards, (preferred camera (DSLR) uses interchangeable lenses); Suitable bag for equipment.  Optional: Polarizing filter; extra lenses; tripod; laptop computer.  Internet access is not available at the Lodge. This workshop is being held from 7 p.m. Friday evening through Sunday noon. Members of the Tiadaghton Audubon Society will lead Saturday Morning Birding Walks at Hills Creek State Park during April and May from 8:00 am to 10:00 am . Walks will feature the many varieties of water and woodland birds that live in or migrate through the parks. The Bald Eagles are often observed, and you may have the opportunity to watch them or the Ospreys that feed at Hills Creek Lake. Please take your binoculars if you have them and wear subdued clothing and sturdy shoes. Walks are usually two hours. Meet at the park office. Registration is not required. The Coudersport Rabies Clinic will be held at the Courthouse Square Gazebo.  The clinic will be from 1:00 - 4:00 PM.  All dogs, cats, and ferrets that are at least 12 weeks old can be vaccinated against the rabies virus.  The first time an animal is vaccinated it is good for one year, each time after that the vaccination is good for three years.  All animals must be on a leash or in a container.  Cost is $5.00 per animal.  The clinic is sponsored by Dr. Ronnie Schenkein of the Coudersport Animal Health Center.

There will be a Chicken Bar-B-Que at the Roulette Firehall on Saturday, May 19 from 11am until chicken is gone.  Cost is $8.00/dinner and $4.00/half.  Dinner consists of chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans and roll.  In-town takeouts available at 544-7762.

There will be a Kid’s Fishing Derby at Lyman Run State Park for kids aged 12 and under.  Registration is free and a free lunch will be provided for all registered participants.  Lunch will also be available for a donation by accompanying adults.  Registrations begins at 9:00 am and will run until 10 am when the derby fishing will begin.  Fishing continues until 1:00 pm.  Prizes and awards will be from 1:15 until 2:00 pm.  A free lunch of hot dogs, pizza and beverage will be served from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at the spillway parking lot.  Adults may purchase lunch for a donation to the Friends Group.

Registration will be held at the spillway parking lot where each child will receive a Friends of Lyman Run backpack with goodies (until they run out!).  Fishing will be allowed in the dam spillway pool and downstream to the marker fence at the old ford area.  The fish measuring tent will also be located at the bottom of the derby raceway.  Parents are reminded to bring bug spray, lawn chairs, fishing poles and bait.  It is also highly recommended that proper footwear be worn as the ground is uneven. Flip flops are NOT recommended for this event at all.  Awards will be presented at the park’s pavilion.  There will be many category and age prizes as well as drawings for prizes based in registration numbers.  Each child will receive a Smokey Bear button that has their registration number on it and this is also the number that they will register to measure their fish under.  All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. 

The derby fishing area will be CLOSED TO ALL FISHING from Thursday May 17 until 10:00 pm on  May 19th.  This area will be patrolled by park and Fish Commission staff.  Fishermen are asked to please respect that this area is select area for the kid’s fishing derby and citations will be issued if you are caught fishing in this section during the close-out period.

Back pack sponsors are Galeton Drug, GB Max Signs, Inc., Sweden Valley Inn, and Ted Dennison Carpentry.  Other donating sponsors for the derby so far are: Gas Field Specialists, Wal-Mart of Mansfield, Canyon Motor Sports, Patterson Lumber, Northwest Savings Bank, Black Forest Conservation Association, Paul Miller, Phil Osgood Excavating, Foxes Pizza ,and Endless Mountain Taxidermy.  The Friends group is still looking for donations and any business or individual who is interested can send a check made out to Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF) and please put “Friends of Lyman Run” in the memo line.  Friends of Lyman Run is a chapter of  PPFF – and non-profit charity (tax deductible) dedicated to preserving and protecting natural resources in our State Parks and Forests and towards fostering programs that will enhance the appreciation of these natural resources.

   The Friends of Lyman Run would like to thank all those who donated funds towards this event and also its grateful acknowledgment of all the hours of volunteer time that the derby committee has put in.  Friends volunteers are still needed for derby day, so please let Director, Maxine Harrison know if you can come out for a few hours and give us a hand.  For further information or to volunteer, please call the Lyman Run State Park office at (814) 435-5010.

Join the Sinnemahoning  park naturalist at the campground amphitheater for a butterfly hike and children's craft from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The program will begin with a walk along the park road to find and identify butterflies. Nets and field guides will be provided. Afterward, the kids will get a chance to create a butterfly craft to take home. Meet at the campground amphitheater. Appropriate footwear is recommended. The Wellsboro men's chorus and the Wellsboro women's chorus are giving a concert "spring fling"  at 7:00 at the United Methodist Church in Wellsboro.  The Wednesday morning musicales, directed by Charlie Jacobson, will also perform.  Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for students, and can be purchased at the door.

Pennsylvania State Police at Coudersport, the Alliance Day Care Center and IU9 Preschool will conduct a Child Safety Seat Check Point from 3:00 to 6:00 pm both days at the Alliance Preschool, Alliance Avenue, Coudersport. The event is being held in conjunction with the National Highway Safety Administration’s “Click it or Ticket” program.  Take your child safety seat, vehicle manual, and seat instructions. The check takes about 20-30 minutes per seat. If you cannot make the date and would like to have a seat checked, call the barracks at 814-274-8690.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Pennsylvania and the Potter County Ed Council is offering a workshop, Understanding Heart Disease & Prevention In this workshop, participants  will review the structures and functions of the heart and blood vessels so that they  can begin to understand this disease.  Presenters  will focus on individual as well as community prevention by identifying risk factors and offering suggestions for modifications.  Examples of diseases of the heart and blood vessels as well as cover signs, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments and prevention of such diseases will be discussed.  Data  will be used to identify the impact of heart disease at local, state and national levels.  Nursing, health educator (CHES) and social worker continuing education credits pending. This workshop is held in partnership with Pitt-Bradford’s Center for Rural Health Practice.  This seminar is being held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Coudersport office of the Potter County Education Council.  The cost is $32 per participant.  To register call UPB at (800) 872-1787.

Earn a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Gannon University in fourteen months with the close-to-home convenience you need!  With this 31-credit, Summer and Online Blended program, attend 3 week-long, face-to-face classes this summer and another 3 classes next summer in Coudersport.  During your busiest time of year, take one course each in Fall 2012 and Spring 2013.  These two courses will be blended, meaning the first and last class of each course will meet face-to-face and the classes in between will be online. The Coudersport Alliance Church will have a 5K run beginning at 8:00 am. Monies raised will go towards sending the CMA Youth to Baltimore, Maryland on a mission trip. 5K run trophies will be awarded to Overall First Place Finisher for men and women and medals will be awarded to the first three place finishers in each sex and age division.

Clinical Outcomes will  have a smoking cessation workshop,Quite & Win a FREE 90 minute tobacco cessation workshop offered to assist individuals quit tobacco use. Cessation coaches will assist each workshop participant in developing an individualized quit plan. The Four-County Senior Games will be held at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Senior citizens from Cameron, Elk, Potter and McKean Counties will compete in various events such as Wii bowling, darts, basketball throw and one mile walk as well as others. A continental breakfast will be served at 9:00 am. Competition starts at 10:00 am. Lunch will be provided.

The annual Golf Tournament benefiting Camp Cadet will be held at the Coudersport Golf Club. Cost is $220 per team, $55 per person. The price includes Golf, Cart, Lunch, Refreshments, Awards. The Potter County Ed Council is offering   a free “Techsploration” for area students.
The purpose of the summer program is to introduce regional youth (grades 5-9) to the many technical job opportunities in the region, to educate their parents about the opportunities and local education providers addressing these needs, and to start developing leadership, interpersonal and soft skills in our youth.  This will be a hands-on learning opportunity for regional youth to visit the Career and Technical Center (CTC), explore the technical career opportunities that exist in the region, and to participate in activities using  the equipment and resources available at the CTC.  During this 2-day session, students will participate in a leadership skills/interpersonal skills development activity, tour the facility, learn about career opportunities the CTC can help prepare them for, and ultimately work on hands-on projects in 4 of the labs at the CTC.  Hands-on activities may include: changing the oil in a car, laser engraving a wood product, building a small piece of furniture, developing a web site, designing a newsletter, building a basic computer network, installing memory to a computer, building a network cable, baking or cooking in the culinary arts kitchen, or any number of other activities  based on the student’s age level to ensure safety and success.The June 11 & 12, 2012 session is for students entering grades 5 & 6.  The June 13 & 14, 2012 session is for students entering grades 7 – 9.  The course will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Seneca Highlands CTC in Port Allegany. The course will help prepare students for careers working as floor hands in the natural gas industry. This program is a combination of classroom and hands-on training. Topics include: Natural Gas Employability Skills, Natural Gas 101, Rig Components & Electrical Systems, Hydraulics, Pressures & Forces, Basic Rigging, Well Production, Basic Well Control, Spill Prevention & Reporting, Fall Protection, Safe Land USA, Basic First Aid/CPR, Defensive Driving, Aerial Work Platform, and Rough Terrain Forklift. This course is being held Monday through Friday, (excluding the week of July 2) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at PCEC’s Port Allegany location.  Tuition is free but participants are responsible for pre-admissions clearances, physical, and drug testing and must register with ShaleNET and with their local CareerLink.

Sinnemahoning State Park is offering Women in the Wilds Outdoor Discovery Weekend . Programs will include biking, archery, kayaking, bird-banding, GPS/geo-caching, fly-fishing, camp cooking, outdoor survival, and many others.  Participants may choose up to eight different sessions over the three days of the event, and all meals are included.  Grab your mom, sister, best friend or co-worker and join with us and other aspiring woods-women for a new adventure in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds!  Contact the park office at (814) 647-8401 for information on registration, available lodging, and fees.
