 Obituary: Dan Harris (Shinglehouse)

Today is Columbus Day observed, a federal holiday. Most state, county and local government offices are closed in observance. Pennsylvania students have the day off for a teacher in-service day. Normal schedules resume Tuesday.

Citizens who want to vote in the upcoming November 7 election are reminded tomorrow, Tuesday October 10 is the last day to register, change party affiliation or report change of address.Positions on school boards, borough councils, boards of township supervisors and many other offices are being filled. Most county election offices have already posted sample ballots on their websites. Absentee ballot applications are available at county elections offices. Part affiliation need not be changed in order to vote in the November election as registered voters can vote for whichever candidates they wish, despite the party in which they are registered. However, according to Pennsylvania law, voters must vote for candidates in their party in spring primaries. Only Republicans and Democrats have enough voters statewide to have candidates in primary electrions. General information on elections and voting is posted on a state-operated website, votespa.com.

A Millerton resident has been arrested for lying while trying to buy a gun last spring. State police at Mansfield claim 31 year old Clinton Hendrick provided false information to Firearms Dealer Richard Despreauux on Route 328 in Lawrence Township, last March 11.

A Gibsonia man was seriously injured in an ATV crash late Saturday night in Millstone Township, Elk County. According to Ridgway based state police, Michael Namey was going south on Route 3002 at around 10:30 pm when his TRX500FMB went off the road and rolled over several times before landing upside down about 20 feet from the road. Namey was ejected and landed just off the right side of the highway. He was taken to a nearby landing zone and flown to UPMC in Altoona.

No injuries were reported for a Pottstown driver whose compact car collided with the rear of a Freightliner truck in Liberty Township, Tioga County. State police at Mansfield explain 27 year old Chelsea Royer fell asleep at the wheel of Toyota Camry on the southbound ramp of Route 15/414 in Liberty last Thursday afternoon. The car went onto the berm where it ran into the back of the unoccupied truck.

Drug charges are pending against a Westfield man after state police were called to his home on Mill Street in Westfield last Thursday night. Troopers say they were called out for a drug overdose and allegedly found drug paraphernalia in 19 year old Brian Meise’s bedroom. He was taken to Soldiers and Sailors Hospital for evaluation.

State police in Kane are looking for a car stolen from an unlocked barn on the Upper Grimes Road in Liberty Township between September 29 and  this past Saturday. The silver 2003 Chrysler Sebring Convertible with a black top  was owned by Jason Gutshall. It’s described as being in poor condition with rusted out rockers, duct tape on fenders,  a NY state inspection sticker and no license plate. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 814.778.5555.

Two Elk county men are suspected of burglarizing a  home on Mill Street in St. Marys between 1:52 and 4:45 pm September 26. Troopers allege the suspects, one from St.Marys and the other form Ridgway stole several items from posted property owned by a St. Marys woman.

State police at Coudersport have revealed that numerous crimes took in Roulette September 16 or 17. Criminals committed theft, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and desecration of a flag  at a home on Maple Street.

Obituary

Daniel C. “Dan” Harris, 65, of Shinglehouse, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2017, in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, after a long illness.

Born on April 18, 1952 in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of Cleo M. and Rita K. Barnes Harris.  On February 15, 1992 in Shinglehouse, he married Sonya D. Cutler, who survives.

Dan was a graduate of Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse.  He was a self-employed water well driller, owning and operating Dan Harris Water Well Drilling until retiring due to ill health.

He was a former member of the Oswayo Valley Rod and Gun Club in Millport.  He was a avid and excellent marksman, winning second place in the Off Hand Rifle division.  He was very talented in gun repair and enjoyed making custom knives.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Daniel C. (Brittney) Harris of Shinglehouse; a daughter, Brandi K. (Joe Shelley) Harris of Shinglehouse; a granddaughter, Haidin E. Shelley; and a sister, Nancy Rawson (Dennis) Ayers of Shinglehouse.

Friends may call from 10:30am to noon on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, where a celebration of life will follow at noon with the Rev. Russell J. Horning , pastor of the First Baptist Church, Shinglehouse, officiating.  Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
