An Emporium woman thwarted cyber criminals from stealing a large sum of money from her bank account. State police say the 56 year old resident reported that someone was trying to electronically withdraw funds from her bank account Monday afternoon in exchange for a renewal subscription to a computer anti-virus company called “Tech Support.” The would-be victim received an email about the renewal asking for $199.99 to renew the subscription . She called the “company’s” phone number and told them she did not want to renew. She was told she would be refunded $500 for a renewal. The “Tech Support” website automatically changed $500 to $5000 and asked the woman to provide $4500 in gift cards. $5,000 was transferred f rom your savings account to her checking account. She was then able to transfer money back into her savings account and change her bank passwords. Police said the victim is not missing any monrey at this time but was advised to contact her bank to ensure her accounts are secure.

State police at Ridgway recovered a pick up truck Sunday afternoon on Route 948/66 in Highland Township which had been stolen from an Erie residence. The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado belongs to a 41 year old man living on Shannon Road in Erie.

DUI charges are pending against 65 year old Frederick Cochran of Port Allegany. Kane based state police say they were notified that Cochran had been consuming alcohol all day and taken an unknown amount of unknown pills. He was pulled over while going north on the Two Mile Road in Annin Township. Troopers claim when they talked to Cochran, they smelled a strong odor of alcohol; placed him under arrest and took him the Bradford Regional Medical Center for a blood draw.
