The unemployment rate went up and down in the region between November and December. Potter County’s jobless rate west down from 6.3% to 6.1%; McKean’s went up slightly from 5.7% to 5.9%; and Tioga County saw an increase from 5.9% to 6.2%. Cameron County held steady at 6.4% and Elk County was static at 4.5%. Adams County had the best percentage in the state at 3.6% and Forest was at the bottom at 7.4%. The unemployment figure in Pennsylvania was 4.7% for the period while the national percentage was 4.1%.

State police at Ridgway are investigating the death of a Wilcox woman. The body of 65 year old Olivia Biel was found just before 8:00 am Tuesday on the Glen Hazel Road near her home.

Troopers at Kane have arrested 32 year old Elise Feroce, no address given, for unsworn falsification. Officers  report when they discovered an abandoned vehicle which  had crashed along Route 66 south of the Jo Jo Road they determined Feroce was the owner. When questioned, she lied to investigators claiming the car had been stolen but their investigation found she was actually driving it at the time of the crash.

The state police fire marshal investigated a pile of ashes on Wismer Lane in Jones Township, Elk County Tuesday. When 89 year old Louis Maroda returned to his camp yesterday, he found it had been completely destroyed by fire. He was at the camp last on December 27. The blaze went undetected so the Wilcox Fire Department was not summoned. The uninsured loss is estimated to be $35,000. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 814.776.6136.

Burglars broke into a camp on Maple Street in Sinnemahoning earlier this month and removed several items including a TV, 22mm ammunition and a wooden swing from the camp owned by Larry Pentz of DuBois. The crime occurred between January 6 and 26.

A substantial amount of money was stolen from a home on the Wilcox Road in Johnsonburg yesterday. Anyone with information is encouraged to call state police at Ridgway.

Shinglehouse man for unlawful activities after the front left wheel on his 1996 Chevrolet 1500 fell off and damaged some property Monday morning in that town. Troopers explained tha Austin was going west on East Honeoye Street when the wheel came off, rolled through private property and crossed over to Maple Street. The wheel continued on, and collided with a plastic lattice fence. The truck continued headed west for about 25 feet before the hub contacted the pavement. The truck went another 50 feet before stopping in the center of the westbound lane. Authorities claim Austin failed to ensure that the left front wheel was properly connected to the hub after performing maintenance.

 A federal prisoner at McKean Federal Correctional Institution in Bradford, Pennsylvania has been sentenced in federal court to 12 months and 1 day in jail on his conviction of assaulting a federal officer, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced today. The sentence imposed will be consecutive to the sentence the defendant is presently serving.

United States District Judge David S. Cercone imposed the sentence Wednesday on Rogelio Muniz-Valdez, 42.

According to information presented to the court, on March 15, 2017, while incarcerated at FCI-McKean, Muniz-Valdez threw urine at a federal officer who was engaged in her official duties.

Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.

United States Attorney Brady commended officers of the McKean Federal Correctional Institution for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Muniz-Valdez.

Fordyce Allen Reese, Jr., 44 of Coudersport, PA passed away Monday, January 29, 2018 at his residence.

Born March 9, 1973 in Coudersport he was the son of Fordyce Allen and Rosemarie Greitl Reese, Sr.

Allen was a graduate of Coudersport High School. He had been employed with Seals Lumber, Wending Creek Farms, Adelphia and Magic Valley Skateland for many years.  He was a volunteer for 25 years with the Coudersport Fire Department, enjoyed woodworking, and built crafts for Reesecreation. He was an avid Steelers fan, supported Matt Kerseth in NASCAR, enjoyed fishing, working with model trains and roller skating. He was an accomplished Christmas light decorator.

Allen is survived by his mother, Rosemarie Reese, of Coudersport, PA, children, Ayden and Alyssa Reese of Coudersport, PA, lifelong love Angela Reese, of Coudersport, PA, brothers, Erhard Reese (Wanda Long), Ulysses, PA and David (Susan) Reese of Coudersport, PA., sisters, Rosie (Donny) Wilson, of York, PA, Loretta Battaglia,  ( late Frank) of Florida, Ellen (Larry) Goodwin, of Coudersport, PA and Marie (Donny) Arrowood, of Coudersport, PA and many nieces , nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, and brother in-law, Frank Battaglia.

Friends and family are invited to Allen’s Life Celebration Sunday, February 4, 2018 at the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home, 210 North East St., Coudersport, PA with a visitation from 12pm-2pm, funeral service to follow at 2pm, Pastor Scott Ogden officiating. Please feel free to wear your Steelers apparel. Burial will be in the Reeseville Cemetery.
